Tornado Alley experiences some of the most frequent and violent tornadoes on Earth. Knowing what to do before, during, and after a tornado can save your life.
1. Watch vs. Warning
A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form; stay alert and monitor local weather. A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar; take shelter immediately.
2. Identifying Safe Shelters
The safest place is a designated storm cellar or basement. If unavailable, go to an interior room on the lowest level (like a bathroom or closet) away from windows. Protect your head with mattresses or heavy blankets.
3. Creating an Emergency Kit
Prepare an emergency bag containing water, non-perishable food, a NOAA weather radio, flashlights, a first-aid kit, and sturdy shoes. Keep helmets handy for head protection against flying debris.
