Huacachina has a warm desert climate. Winters (May to November) are sunny and pleasant with highs around 78°F (25°C). Summers can get very hot, with temperatures exceeding 90°F (32°C) and virtually zero rainfall.

According to local folklore, the lagoon was created when a native princess was bathing and fled when spotted by a hunter, leaving her mirror behind which shattered to form the lagoon.
