How to Prepare Your Home for Severe Winter Blizzards
Essential safety checklists, heating backups, pipe protection, and emergency kit planning for extreme winter weather.
Preparing for Severe Winter Storms
Blizzards bring freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and high winds that can cause power outages lasting for days. Preparing your home now is key to staying safe.
1. Prevent Frozen Pipes
Allow faucets to drip slowly during extreme cold to keep water moving. Insulate water pipes located in unheated areas (basements, crawl spaces, attics).
2. Secure Alternate Heating Sources
Ensure you have safe backup heating, such as wood for a fireplace or a professionally installed generator. Never use gas grills or camp stoves indoors.
3. Create an Emergency Pantry
Stockpile at least 3 to 7 days of non-perishable food, bottled water (1 gallon per person per day), batteries, flashlights, and prescription medications.
